Nadia Feracho
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY Nadia (Nay-di-uh) Feracho is a creative whose goal is to challenge the narrative of mainstream media by bringing awareness to underrepresented communities and cultures through film and photography. In a household with Trinidadian father and Barbadian mother Nadia was inspired by many cultures. She loved hearing stories about her parents upbringing and knew that these stories needed to be heard in some way.
In her junior year of undergrad at Marymount Manhattan College, she took a Web Video Activism class that opened her eyes to highlighting the topics that affected her, like beauty standards, gentrification and issues that she faces every day in her community. Realizing how powerful her camera could be when she used it for standing up for what she believes in, she created a short documentary titled “Don’t Tell Me to Relax!” which focuses on Black women's experiences tied to wearing their natural hair.
Because it speaks to her passion, her favorite quote is by artist Gordon Parks from his autobiography “A Choice of Weapons.” He states, “I chose my camera as a weapon against all the things I dislike about America—poverty, racism, discrimination.” This is a quote that has inspired her to push herself as an artist and to capture the moments that she is passionate about before they are gone.
